Analyze light source consistency. Authentic photography has a coherent light source — shadows fall in one direction, highlights correspond to a single origin point. AI-generated images sometimes contain lighting that is locally convincing but globally inconsistent. A subject's face may be lit from the left while reflections in nearby surfaces suggest light from the right.
Look at text and signage. AI models notoriously struggle with legible text embedded in images. Signs, labels, and printed materials in synthetic images frequently contain garbled letter-forms that resemble words without being them. Even when text appears correct at a glance, close inspection often reveals spacing anomalies or character inconsistencies.
Evaluate the grain and sensor character. Authentic photographs carry the fingerprint of the camera that captured them — sensor noise, chromatic aberration, lens distortion, and depth-of-field behavior that follows optical physics. AI images often exhibit an uncanny smoothness, a textural uniformity that looks processed rather than captured. This can be subtle, but it registers psychologically even when it is not consciously identified.
